2022 RAD Reading Challenge for Teens!

For me, the new year always brings a new reading challenge. In 2020 I completed and wrote about the Read Harder Reading Challenge. And last year I created my very own — The 2021 RPL Teen Reading Challenge. Each year I would say I have moderate success with these. I’ve discovered some new authors, genres, and books that I may not have otherwise. But I’ve also read some duds. So why do I return to these challenges year after year, you might ask? The answer, simply, is that they get me out of my reading comfort zone. As a librarian, this is super important. I want to have a wide range of literary knowledge to provide the best readers’ advisory for the teens I work with. I also think it’s important for readers in general to get out of their reading comfort zones. Reading books, authors, genres, and subjects that are not our norm is how we grow. And I think one of our biggest personal responsibilities in life is to continue to grow, both as individuals and as members of our communities. Plus, reading and discovering new things is just plain fun!

This year I’ve decided to take on a reading challenge created by a local book blogger, Rachel Dawson. I’ve been a big fan of Rachel’s, or RAD’s, for several years now. She describes herself as a “believer, writer, communicator, creator, big bookworm, ENNEAGRAM 1  + INFJ, vegan, and gluten-free — and she writes about all of these things on her blog! She also has fabulous Instagram and TikTok accounts which are fun to follow because chats about a variety of great reads. Her 2022 RAD Reading Challenge is fun and extremely approachable. She’s included nine prompts (or challenges) and these prompts are broad enough that I think they can appeal to all readers.

As always, I’ll complete the challenge using only YA books (I’m a teen librarian after all!). I’ll write about what book I chose for each prompt as well as give you some additional reading suggestions. Best of all, RAD will be chiming in with some of her own YA suggestions for the prompts, too! Now, readers, if you would like to join in the challenge, please don’t feel like you have to read all YA like me. You can tackle this however you’d like. In fact, RAD herself will be doing just that. She’ll be reading an amazing variety of books for the challenge this year. I’ll be sure to include a link to her blog so you can see what other reads she’s suggesting. Win-win!

Now, for the challenge itself:

If you visit RAD’s blog, you’ll find a printable PDF version as well as some Insta graphics you can use to share your progress. If you do decide to take on the challenge, we’d love it if you could tag @rvalibrary and @alltheradreads. Also, feel free to use #aradreadingchallenge to join in the fun.

I’ll complete these prompts in order and plan to read Prompt #1 over the weekend. So, check back Monday for my graphic novel choice, Almost American Girl by Robin Ha!
