Founded in 1997, the Richmond Public Library Foundation develops, administers and allocates private funds to provide the extra margin of excellence for the City’s library system by enhancing existing public support for the library and its programs. The City of Richmond provides funding for library buildings, staff, and basic books and materials. The Foundation seeks additional funding through donations to fill in the gaps and help the library achieve and maintain excellence.

The Foundation is guided by a Board of Directors made up of dedicated community volunteers who promote the library, build relationships and maintain the highest level of fiscal responsibility and financial management of the organization. They have placed the Foundation in an excellent position for growth and service to the library. The Foundation holds more than $850,000 in total assets, which have been raised through private donations, corporate gifts and foundation and government grants. Gifts to the Foundation support early literacy initiatives, new technology, special projects and free educational programs for all ages.
