    Question

  • I just recently learned about the Master Gardener program and would love more information on when training is available! Thanks!
  • Answer

  • Thank you so much for your interest in the Master Gardener Program! Applications for the program typically open in September and the training program begins in the new year and runs through March/April. Trainees are required to complete 50 hours of classroom time and 50 hours of volunteer time during their first year. Ongoing yearly commitments as a Master Gardener are 8 hours of continuing education and 20 hours of volunteer time. Question

  • Hello, I'm interested in signing up for the next VA Master Gardening Course - would you be kind enough to send information on when it'll be open for registration? Thank you, Jaime
  • Answer

  • Hello Jaime! We are really excited to hear that you are interested in getting involved with the Master Gardeners in Virginia. There are several different units throughout the state based on locality. The Richmond Master Gardeners currently have two students going through a training program and we hope to have at least two spaces again for a class that should start in the beginning of 2026. I'll follow up with an e-mail to you so that we can stay in touch when more information is available for the future class. There may be other localities surrounding the Richmond area that are offering classes with a sooner start date.

Becoming a Master Gardener

Date Posted: Mon, Oct 07 - 11:58 pm

    Question

  • Recently moved to the RVA. Interested in becoming a MG. What're next steps? M
  • Answer

  • Micah, welcome to Richmond! We are so glad you are here and hope you will truly enjoy your new hometown - Richmond has so much to offer! And we are excited to hear about your interest in becoming a master gardener. The city of Richmond has been with out an extension agent for the last several years and our group of master gardeners has been operating without direct city leadership. Because of this, we have not been able to offer the program to bring new master gardeners on. This year, however, we have been able to partner with one of the other localities in the area and will have the opportunity to have two people go through the master gardener training on behalf of Richmond. We are very excited and will have more information coming out soon about this! I will send you an email so that we can stay in touch and I can be sure to get these details over to you when they are available. Thanks for reaching out!

Joining RVA Master Gardeners

    Question

  • Hello — I was so excited to read about RVa Master Gardeners! I live in RVa near FH Park and am currently in the Hanover MG Trainee class. I would love to be involved in volunteer activities here — can you please send me information about membership, meetings, etc. Thank you!
  • Answer

  • Hi! I'm so excited you are in the training class right now - hope you are enjoying it and getting a lot out of it! Richmond has been without an extension agent for the last several years and are therefore unable to offer the training class ourselves right now. We do, however, have a small group of active members that are meeting regularly and working around the city with the majority of our work being focused with schools and libraries. We are able to accept transfers from other localities after completion of the master gardener training class. I will follow up with an e-mail so that we can connect and I can answer any further questions more directly!

Invasive plant removal / Joining Master Gardeners

Date Posted: Fri, Aug 11 - 10:16 am

    Question

  • Any good contractors in the area to help with invasive removal by a utility line. Have privet in my backyard it’s growing into power lines. Oh also I would love to be part of the master gardener program but got no response when contacting vatech contact. Let me know what’s required to join the local chapter
  • Answer

  • I don't have personal experience with any contractors for removing invasive species, but have always heard really good things about Davey: https://www.davey.com/environmental-consulting-services/invasive-species-management-control/ Also, we would love to have new members join the Richmond Master Gardeners! But unfortunately, the city does not currently have an extension agent and hasn't for a few years now. This means there is no one in place to run the Master Gardener training program so we are unable to take on new members at this time. I believe that Henrico, Chesterfield, and Hanover are still able to offer the new member program, so I would suggest reaching out to them if you are interested.
