JOIN THE RICHMOND PUBLIC LIBRARY AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST HEART DISEASE AND STROKE!

Check It Out: Your Blood Pressure at the Library is a community-based initiative to reduce hypertension. Its goal is to increase awareness about blood pressure (BP) and BP control by meeting people where they are. Through monthly BP screenings at Richmond Public Library branches, you and your loved ones will have the opportunity to know your numbers, learn about healthy lifestyles, and be connected or reconnected with primary care to support BP monitoring and control. Richmond Public Library card holders can also check out a BP kit for self monitoring at home.

Screenings are walk-up and no appointment is needed.

For accurate readings, do not smoke, drink caffeinated beverages or exercise 30 minutes before. You should also use the restroom before to empty your bladder. Please wear clothing that will allow the cuff to be placed on your bare upper arm.

Volunteers from Capital Area Health Education Center will be conducting the screenings.

Participants will be asked to rest for 3-5 minutes before and during their blood pressure check. Screenings are done with a validated, automated blood pressure monitor for accuracy.

High blood pressure can only be diagnosed by a medical professional. It is recommended you be seen for an in-office BP screening. If you don’t have a doctor, you will be offered a referral to Capital Area Health Network or Daily Planet Health Services. Both health centers can provide their patients with their own blood pressure monitor to partner as part of a self-measured blood pressure program.
