What is Youth Art Month?

Youth Art Month is part of a nationwide initiative that began in 1961. It was founded by the Art & Creative Materials Institute (ACMI). The goals of Youth Art Month were twofold: to celebrate the visual arts in all their forms and to advocate for arts education.

In 1984, ACMI created the nonprofit Council for Art Education (CFAE). CFAE took over the initiative and expanded it into the celebration it is today. Today, schools and libraries across the country participate through exhibitions, festivals, events, contests, and more.

Want to learn more about the history and purpose of YAM? Visit the CFAE website.

Each year, Youth Art Month comes alive at Richmond Public Library with artwork from talented local students. Visit us March 1–31 to explore vibrant exhibits and celebrate the creativity of Richmond’s young artists.

We also have several exciting events going on throughout the month:

  • Youth Art Month at Ginter Park—Teens, come celebrate Youth Art Month with a new art project every Wednesday at 4:30 PM. Registration required. (3/4 Art Collage; 3/11 Beaded Houseplants; 3/18 Spring Needle Felting; 3/25 Woven Art)
  • Get Crafty Together: Introduction to Gouache—Discover the vibrant world of gouache painting! Learn basic techniques and create your own colorful artwork. Main Library, 3/6, 4:00 PM
  • STEAM Team: Fizzy Art—Celebrate Youth Art Month by making fizzy art with baking soda, vinegar, and food coloring. Registration required. West End Branch, 3/17, 4:00 PM

Bookmark Design Contest

As part of Youth Art Month, we’re excited to introduce something new this year—a Bookmark Design Contest! In addition to our Youth Art Month exhibitions and programs, this creative opportunity invites students to showcase their artistic talent in a meaningful way.

Young artists in elementary, middle, and high school are encouraged to submit an original bookmark design celebrating Youth Art Month, their love of libraries, or this year’s theme, “The World Needs Art.” Designs may also highlight what they appreciate about Richmond Public Library or any idea that reflects their creativity and passion for learning.

A panel of judges will select one winner from each age group, and the winning bookmarks will be professionally printed and distributed at all Richmond Public Library locations during National Library Week (April 19–25).

To enter, pick up a design template at any Richmond Public Library branch or download one from our website. Completed designs must be submitted in person to a branch location by close of business on March 31.
