October is spooky season, so this month’s selections have some horror titles, as well as, returning favorite authors, multi-generational drama, and what some think is the most anticipated book of the year.
October 6
A sequel 18 years after publication of The Shack, a new title from beloved Pulitzer Prize winner, an exploration of how the Gold Rush and Civil War are connected, and a tale of interracial friendships start off this month’s hot new titles. Oh and we can’t forget yet another new book from a prolific writer who also somehow finds time to practice medicine!

My pick:
The title alone draws me to this book, and add in an old family curse? Even better!
From the publisher:
“Dartrine Beaumont believes her mother’s sudden death has left her alone in the world–until she learns of long-lost wealthy relatives living in Florida. Confused but delighted by the possibility of extended family, Dart travels to her grandmother’s stately Gilded Age mansion on Amelia Island for answers, just in time to stake a claim on an unusual inheritance: an alligator farming empire.
Her arrival at Greer House isn’t everything she hoped. Without warning, Dart finds herself in fierce competition with her grandmother’s arrogant heir apparent, and tensions rise as threats escalate on one of the farms. More unsettling is her hostile grandmother’s fanatical belief that the danger stems from a curse; according to legend, a larger-than-life alligator hunted down by a bloodthirsty ancestor haunts the family. Yet Dart can’t deny that the farm’s alligators hiss only at Greers, or that a shadowy figure creeps through the mansion’s halls.
As Dart uncovers the truth about her violent birthright, she faces a terrible choice: accept her place in her family’s grim legacy or forge a new path by slaying a different beast entirely.”
October 13
This week brings a new thriller from a seasoned YA author, a new Native horror tale set five years after Only Good Indians, new addition to “Marvelverse” by a popular native Virginian, sophomore title from popular author of Lessons in Chemistry, and the launch of a new sci-fi duology from one the genre’s best.

My pick:
My adolescence was during the 90s, and I love books set in Britain, so this book was a no-brainer pick for me!
From the publisher:
“For Alex Lane’s wealthy university friends, the summer break stretches out before them, full of promise and fabulous plans. But for Alex, broke as usual, going home is not an option. So when the university offers him an unusual summer job clearing out a dilapidated Victorian mansion, Solace House, he jumps at the chance.
Alex joins an unlikely crew of students, from stoner Clive to uptight, short-tempered Helen, and the extremely peculiar Adam. Alex is particularly drawn to mercurial, red-headed Ella, and as the students begin sorting through piles of old newspapers and magazines, dusty antiques, and esoteric junk, Alex and Ella become enthralled by the elaborate and eerie journals of the house’s former owner, Edwin Flayne. In these diaries, Flayne details his obsession with his missing mother and his belief in a mysterious realm lying parallel to ours, along with coded instructions on how it might be reached.
As the students gradually uncover the house’s secrets, the rift between those who want to delve further and those who believe they’ve already gone too far grows ever wider.”
October 20
What you’ll find this week is a new horror book not for the faint of heart, new mystery from one of the masters of that genre, book 21 in the Chief Inspector Gamache series, a witchy tale set in the fifteenth century, and a new cookbook from one of the most popular American chefs.

My Pick:
I love multigenerational Historical Fiction, and this one has the added bonus starting off being set in Ireland.
From the publisher:
“1960s, Ireland. In the wake of tragedy, a father makes choices for his eleven grieving sons. The older brothers will emigrate to England for work, while the younger ones will stay behind. The second eldest, Macdara, is offered a job on a Montana cattle ranch and sets off. His spirited younger brother Rian begs to come along and Mac promises to bring Rian to America as soon as he’s old enough. But then one day Mac gets a call that Rian has gone missing. His disappearance will haunt Mac and his family across decades.
Spanning lifetimes and continents, Whale Harbor is “tender, immersive, and exquisitely written” (Florence Knapp, author of The Names) with award-winning author Mary Beth Keane’s signature wit, eloquence, and attention to the emotional resonance of family, brotherhood, and the choices that echo across generations.”
October 27
Rounding out the month we have a WWII debut, a coming-of-age tale of friendship and romance set in Wisconsin, a sci-fi story exploring first contact with hive mind and spirituality, a new addition to a fan favorite detective series, and finally the next book in a beloved series we’ve all been waiting for.

My pick:
Remember when I said I grew up in the 90s? That means I’m obsessed with Jurassic Park (the original) and dinosaurs, so I can’t wait to read about this infamous queen.
From the publisher:
“Tyrannosaurus rex is a prehistoric celebrity. Exceeding 40 feet in length and weighing over 9 tons, the largest individuals of this dinosaurian species were intimidating predators capable of crushing bone and consuming more than a hundred pounds of flesh in a bite. But the last of the tyrant dinosaurs had a life beyond ripping and tearing. More than 66 million years ago, T. rex courted each other, nested, watched over their offspring, slept, drank, and explored ancient floodplains inhabited by a fantastic cast of impressive dinosaurs like the huge long-neck Alamosaurus and burly, three-horned Torosaurus. For the first time, the life story of this impressive, sensitive predator is told as if you were there to watch it unfold.
In her latest prehistoric nature walk, bestselling and award-winning author Riley Black follows the life of plucky T. rex Snaggletooth from the time she hatches through her tumultuous adulthood. The prehistoric forest Snag emerges into is full of danger, and yet, as Riley bases Snaggletooth’s life on the latest scientific discoveries, the carnivorous dinosaur survives to play, court, fight, sleep, nest, and more as she grows up in Cretaceous North America. She tussles with rival tyrannosaurs, hunts for delectable prey, and finds soft moments of connection in the forest. Even the most die-hard dinosaur fan will come away with a new perspective and appreciation for the Tyrant Lizard Queen.”
