What Makes a Book Cozy?

Find your next comfort read for chilly days ahead! Imagine yourself relaxing in a cozy armchair wrapped up in a plush blanket with your favorite hot drink and a book you can happily get lost in that feels like a warm hug. Cozy books feature charming and inviting settings like small quaint towns/villages or warm and intimate locations like bakeries, bookshops, libraries, and sometimes magical places. They also highlight loveable and often quirky characters and put an emphasis on found family, community building and connection, kindness, and warm humor that is built on shared experiences and affection.

In general, the stories are pretty low stakes and are non-gory (at least explicitly). Conflicts usually wrap up nicely, and readers are provided with happy endings that focus on empathy, feelings of safety, and being understood. They also incorporate the sentiment of finding joy in everyday magic, small adventures, heartfelt bonds, and gentle healing over looking for thrill seeking and grand quests. Cozy fiction often differs from other types of fiction as it focuses on distinct narrative elements like prioritizing internal over external stakes by highlighting inner conflict and then finding peace, learning self-acceptance, and healing through community, rather than only battling against external forces at large and triumphing through power alone.

Can Cozy Books Span Multiple Genres?

Cozy books don’t have to be limited by one set genre. It’s more about the positive feelings they evoke, the sense of anemoia (vicarious nostalgia for things the reader has never actually experienced) they elicit, and the comfort of finding simple pleasure in idyllic settings and experiences that offer a gentle and low-stress way to take a step back from ones own life. While reading, readers can also dive into that warmth, connection, comfort, and hopefulness infused into cozy stories.

There are many subgenres of cozy books, including cozy fantasy, cozy romance, cozy mystery (although cozy mystery books are typically marketed more to adults than young adults) and even cozy “healing fiction,” which is particularly popular in Japan and Korea (also marketed more to adults). This curated list of YA titles below tries to blend different genres by specifically looking for that common cozy and comforting thread that ties them together — whether they are set in a small town, a magical/whimsical world, the relaxing atmosphere of a bakery, or something else that leaves you feeling warm and at ease.

Why Should You Consider Making Your Next Read a Cozy One?

Reading cozy books is a great way to reduce stress and simply escape into the soothing, small-scale lives and adventures of beloved characters. Readers find joy in the serenity of the worldbuilding, the relaxing rituals, the creative hobbies, and the feelings these stories spark, which are designed to help readers let out a collective breath and unwind. They are also deeply rooted in the experience of humanness and all of the messy, quiet, and beautiful everyday realities of aliveness. Whether the character is human or anthropomorphic, they center human emotions, vulnerability, connection building, and emotional growth.

Besides providing a sense of emotional comfort and healing for their characters, these stories also promote radical empathy (often even for characters who seem undeserving of forgiveness as they can even sympathize with the fates of villains), caring for and showing kindness to others (especially outsiders), and valuing lighthearted and mundane moments over heart-pounding and exhilarating situations when looking for true meaning and joy. If you’re looking to be reassured and to give precedence to personal wellbeing and whimsy, look no further than these cozy YA reads.
