Press Release
Library Card Sign-Up Month 2023
Post Date: 9/1/2023
Get in Your Element this Fall with a Library Card
(Richmond, VA) — This September, Richmond Public Library (RPL) joins the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide to remind everyone about the power of a library card. RPL connects Richmond to information, resources, and programs for people of all ages.
Use your RPL card to borrow books, eBooks, and audiobooks. Access hoopla or Libby for musical performances, movies, and more. Bring your child or grandchild to Homework Help or use meeting rooms for work and study. Learn new skills, find a notary, or dive into a genealogy project — a library card is your (free) ticket to help you do more of what you enjoy.
If you want to learn a new hobby, RPL can help there, too. We have sewing machines, CRICUT, and 3-D printers as well as programs so you can learn how to use them. Thinking about starting or growing a small business? RPL can help with guides for nonprofits, small business informational sessions, and more. Curious about Richmond history, or want to share your library memories? Come visit the Richmond Room at the Main Library.
There’s something for everyone at RPL, and signing up for a library card is the first step on the path to academic achievement and lifelong learning. It’s elemental, really — everyone should have one!
Richmond Public Library, along with libraries everywhere, continues to adapt and expand services to meet the evolving needs of our community. To sign up for a library card or to learn more about the library’s resources and programs, please visit rvalibrary.org.
This September, RPL will host special Dance Parties with Ripple (our lovable river otter mascot) at all of our locations. Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to boogie-oogie because we are celebrating Library Card Sign-Up Month with a party! Ripple will be showing off his best dance moves and posing for pictures. And everyone who attends will get a special Ripple stuffie, too! Here’s the schedule:

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the ALA and libraries work together in a national effort to ensure every child signs up for their own library card.
The Richmond Public Library System serves Richmond and its bordering communities through nine library locations, one in each voting district. Our mission is to Inform, Enrich, and Empower Richmond’s residents.
